Therapy Services for Young Children and Families
Dr. Bekman partners with families to help young children (ages 0-5) who have experienced scary or stressful events. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts to protect our young children, many families go through stressful experiences. As much as we wish that their tender age would shield them from these events, even the youngest of children are very sensitive to stress in their environment. They let us know with their behaviors and emotions that they have been affected by these scary events. Dr. Bekman works with families when young children have been through challenging things like the loss of a loved one, separation from caregivers, serious medical procedures, and other frightening events such as abuse or witnessing violence at home or in the community. She provides a safe and supportive environment where children and their parents/caregivers can talk about difficult experiences, co-create meaning and learn healthy ways to manage strong emotions. Dr. Bekman believes the only way to support very young children through difficult times is to do so in full-fledged partnership with their beloved parents and caregivers who have the most treasured role in their young children’s lives.
In addition to working with very young children, Dr. Bekman also offers support to individuals navigating the transition to parenthood, recognizing the unique challenges and joys this journey can bring. She has a particular passion for working with pregnant individuals who themselves may have experienced stressful or traumatic experiences and are seeking support in advance of bringing new life into the world.
